LONG JOURNEY HOME (Paperback)

Long Journey Home is the the biography of Maurice Mahurin Frink Jr., photojournalist. The book has 217 pages which include over 50 illustrations of Maurie's prize-winning historical photographs along with several other glimpses of his personal life.

Because Maurie was both photgrapher and writer, he was able to take an active part first in the African and then the Italian campaigns of WWII while working with the Office of War Information. In North Africa, Maurie was able to preserve a largely unpublished part of WWII history with on-the-spot photos and accounts of exploding ammunition dumps in Algiers and generals James Doolittle and Carl Spaatz with the 99th bombardment group in North Africa.

While he was with the British Eighth Army in Italy, Maurie found and photographed proof of German atrocities in Cassino and Florence where he also made propoganda leaflets to be shell-fired behind enemy lines.

When the war ended, Maurie came home, but not for long. He returned to Germany in 1946 where he helped restore peace in Eurpope and gave us still more unpublished photos of several almost-forgotten efforts made there by Allied peace-keeping agencies. Maurie photographed First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who joined in American efforts to help rebuild Europe.

But photography and 20th Century history are only two of the reasons to read about Maurie Frink. Maurie's 80 year journey home was not a lonely one. His is a story of a close-knit family which can teach each of us valuable lessons about our own relationships with parents, siblings, children, and even our ancestors.

Family relationships are a third lesson that Maurie's story can teach us, but certainly not the last. All the while Maurie traveled from Elkhart, Indiana, to New York City then on to North Africa, Italy, and post-war Europe, he was sometimes with, often times without, his family.  But he was never without God. Each of the twenty parts of this book begins with a Bible verse pertinant to God's part in all our lives, especially Maurie's, who finally found God waiting for him at the end of his long journey home.
